De

Virtue, in the older sense of accumulated conduct that confers power rather than of moral reputation — the two meanings are the same word in the sources, and the alchemical texts trade on it. It is the remedy the classical literature gives for obstruction by mo: a practitioner with nothing accumulated behind them is held to be the one who runs into trouble. This is why the conduct rules in this tradition read like technical requirements rather than like advice.
