"Testing by demons". The doctrine that obstruction arrives in proportion to progress — that the further a practitioner gets, the more they attract what would interrupt them, and that passing these trials is part of the path rather than a sign of having gone wrong. It is the frame in which the classical warnings about spirits are set: not an accident that may happen, but something expected.
