The physical body is remade to carry what now inhabits it.
Description
Reconstructed. Classical alchemy speaks of "washing the marrow and changing the bones" (xi sui huan gu) — a thorough physical reconstitution. Thirty-six is a natural place to mark it: half of seventy-two, and the count of the Heavenly Stars in Chinese lore that pairs with the seventy-two Earthly ones.
Practice
- Reconstructed from the body-refinement literature this band draws on: xi sui (洗髓) and huan gu (換骨), washing the marrow and changing the bones. No new method is given — the claim is that the same refinement, continued long enough, reaches tissue that earlier work could not.
- What the corpus does supply here is a completion rather than an exercise. The vessel is described as finished: sealed, reworked throughout, and ready for the gestation the next band is about. Everything before this point is preparation for something that has not yet begun.
Signs and effects
- The classical catalogue: cold and heat tolerated, illness rare, the body reportedly lighter and more resilient than the practitioner's age accounts for.
How it is tested
Not published. In the classical accounts the completion of the vessel is recognised by a teacher rather than demonstrated by the student.
Obstacles
- The length of it. This band is described everywhere as the long one, and the classical texts lose more practitioners to its tedium than to any of its dangers.
- Taking the halfway mark for an arrival. Thirty-six of seventy-two is a satisfying number and, on the tradition's own account, the point at which nothing has yet been produced.
